The information herein is provided for the general use of employees of the General Accounting Office (GAO) and its contractors and subcontractors. We make the information available to help identify how the agency should track general program spending data. However, the information is provided as part of GAO's responsibilities under 25 6103, which requires GAO to provide information to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) regarding: (1) the methodology developed to produce the data; (2) the procedures used to collect this information; and (3) the procedures that agencies use to disseminate data to OMB. OMB's program spending data are published through OMB's Budget, Accounting, and Statistics (BEAT) system from the budget line of the agency for each fiscal year. GAO collects these data in an ongoing project to provide GAO with an annual snapshot of total government program cost and financial data used for budget preparation, and a complete accounting of the government's operations in fiscal year 2000.

This data collection was approved by the Office of Management and Budget and the OMB Director on June 29, 2001. (The original proposed data collection began in 2000, with the first data collection request issued May 7, 2000, and the final order issued January 22, 2001.) Requesting a Data Collection
Information on how to request this collection shall be found in the Notice. The information required for any request for this collection shall include the following information: (1) The requestor, institution, or entity requesting the general program spending data; (2) The collection in question; (3) The time the data are expected to be available; and (4) The date of expected completion of the requested collection.
All requests for this collection will be considered on a pre-screening basis. The Office of Management and Budget, upon review of the information provided above will determine whether the requested information is available in the time frame requested.
